The Margin: West’s second-tallest skyscraper opens in San Francisco

The second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River opened for business Monday in San Francisco, though a rainstorm prevented the new occupants from checking out their new view.

The 61-story Salesforce Tower, which stands 1,070 feet high and dominates the San Francisco skyline, will be the new headquarters of Inc. CRM, +0.70%  , which will lease 36 floors.

Chief Executive Marc Benioff welcomed the building’s first occupants in a tweet Monday:

On the West Coast, the sleek, curved tower is only shorter than the 1,100-foot Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles, which opened last year. That building, though, is boosted by a 166-foot spire at its top.

The Salesforce Tower is topped by a six-story atrium enveloped by aluminum panels embedded with LEDs, which will create, in effect, a 100-foot-tall video screen that will light up as a sky-high piece of public art.

While the tower will offer sprawling vistas of San Francisco and the Bay Area on clear days, clouds made the view Monday underwhelming.

Here are some better views from earlier this year:
