If you’re a regular reader here at Small Business Bonfire, you’ll know that I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve my productivity and well-being.

So, imagine my relief when I stumbled upon some simple morning habits that took the edge off my stress and made my days more manageable!

These habits aren’t sophisticated or time-consuming, but their impact on my daily life has been profound. They’ve helped me cultivate balance, resilience and a deeper understanding of myself. 

And I strongly believe they can do the same for you.

Let’s get right to ‘em. 

1) Getting up at least 2 hours before starting work

So, I know this might sound a bit extreme—and I also know it won’t be possible for everyone. But personally, I’ve found that giving myself at least two hours before diving into work has been a complete game-changer.

I’m lucky enough to have some control over my schedule, so this doesn’t mean I have to wake up at 5 AM. But it does mean that I start my day on my own terms, rather than immediately rushing into work mode. 

And let me tell you—the difference in my stress levels has been huge.

Research suggests this might be a key to success, too. One study of self-made millionaires found that nearly 50% of them were up at least three hours before their workday began.

It makes sense—having time to ease into the day rather than jumping straight into emails and deadlines allows for better focus, less stress, and a greater sense of control.

So, what do I do with these extra hours? Well, that’s what we’re about to get into next.

2) Exercising

You knew this was coming, right?

I wasn’t always a big fan of morning workouts— the thought of dragging myself out of bed to move my body? Yeah, not exactly appealing. 

But let me tell you, the benefits are nothing short of immense.

I feel more energized, more focused, and way less stressed throughout the day. It’s like hitting a mental reset button before diving into work. 

And it’s not just me—this is well backed up by experts, too. The folks at Mayo Clinic note that “Exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries.”

So, what do I do exactly?

Well, for me, it’s lifting some weights. But for you, it could be something totally different. Maybe it’s a quick stretch, or even a dance session in your living room. 

The point isn’t what you do—it’s that you move!

3) Taking a morning walk in nature

When was the last time you stepped outside in the morning, took a deep breath, and just noticed the world around you? The sound of birds, the crisp morning air, the way the light filters through the trees?

Well, I’ve started doing it daily, and it’s been one of the most refreshing changes to my routine. I’m lucky because here in Auckland, the temperatures are pretty much never too hot or too cold—making it easy to get outside year-round.

And science backs this up, too. Research suggests that spending just 120 minutes a week in nature is linked to better overall well-being. That’s just over 17 minutes a day—totally doable, right?

For me, these morning walks help clear my mind before the day begins. There’s something about the fresh air, the movement, and the quiet that sets the perfect tone for a productive, stress-free day.

If you can, try it. Even a short walk around the block could make a bigger difference than you think.

4) Gratitude journaling

This is a big one.

It’s easy to get caught up in what’s stressing us out—deadlines, responsibilities, the never-ending to-do list. But taking just a few moments each morning to focus on what’s going right has completely shifted my mindset.

And it’s not just a feel-good practice—there’s real science behind it. The folks at Harvard Health sum it up well: 

“In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

For me, this habit is simple. Every morning, I write down three things I’m grateful for. Sometimes they’re big things—exciting opportunities, meaningful relationships. Other times, it’s as small as a great cup of coffee or a sunny morning walk.

The point isn’t what you write—it’s that you take a moment to acknowledge the good. And once you do, you start noticing even more of it throughout your day.

5) Goal setting

Tony Robbins once said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” And honestly, I’ve found this to be true in every aspect of my life.

Before I started setting clear goals each morning, I often felt like I was just reacting to whatever the day threw at me. Now, I take a few minutes to map out what I want to accomplish, and it makes a huge difference.

I don’t overcomplicate it—I simply write down my top three priorities for the day. This keeps me focused, gives me a sense of direction, and helps me avoid that overwhelming feeling of “Where do I even start?”

Big or small, having a clear intention for the day sets the tone for productivity and progress. Because if you don’t decide what matters most, the distractions will decide for you.

None of these take much time, but together, they’ve helped me feel more focused, less stressed, and more in control of my mornings. 

And the best part? They’re totally adaptable. You don’t have to do all of them—just start with one and see how it impacts your day.
