This one is a huge pet peeve of mine—and I’m not alone in this. In a survey by Preply, “You’re too sensitive” topped the list as the worst passive-aggressive phrase. 

Why is it so bad?

Well, at first glance, it might seem like a harmless observation or even an attempt to lighten the mood. But in reality, this phrase dismisses and invalidates the other person’s feelings, making them feel like they’re at fault for having an emotional response. 

Essentially, it shifts the blame onto them rather than addressing the issue at hand.

What makes it so insidious is the implication that the person being “too sensitive” is overreacting or unreasonable. It creates an instant barrier in communication, making it nearly impossible for the other person to feel heard or understood.

Instead of resorting to this phrase, try showing empathy. For example, you could say, “I didn’t mean to upset you. Can we talk about what’s bothering you?” 

Acknowledging someone’s feelings—even if you don’t fully agree with their perspective—can go a long way in building trust and mutual respect.

3) I’m just being honest…

This is a big one. 

The phrase “I’m just being honest…” is often used as a precursor to some blunt, and not always pleasant, feedback. 

While honesty is indeed a virtue, deploying it without tact or empathy can lead to unnecessary hurt and conflict.

Rather than using honesty as a shield for insensitivity, it’s better to frame feedback in a constructive and empathetic manner. A little bit of kindness can go a long way in maintaining healthy social interactions. 

4) It’s not that big of a deal…

In my own social interactions, I’ve noticed a phrase that often gets tossed around without much thought: “It’s not that big of a deal…”

I know it might seem like a harmless statement, meant to diffuse a situation or minimize conflict. But over time, I’ve come to realize that it can actually do more harm than good.

For instance, I remember a time when a friend shared their struggles with me. They were going through a tough time and needed someone to listen. Instead of offering empathy and understanding, I responded with: “It’s not that big of a deal…”

Immediately, I saw their expression change. My intention was to comfort them, to tell them things weren’t as bad as they seemed. But instead, it came off as dismissive and unsympathetic.

This phrase can make the other person feel like their feelings or experiences are being trivialized or dismissed. It’s important to remember that what may seem insignificant to us might be a big deal to someone else.

5) No offense, but…

This is another phrase that’s frequently used by people who lack basic social skills. Like “I’m just being honest”, it’s typically used as a disclaimer before saying something potentially offensive or hurtful.

But here’s the issue: saying “no offense” doesn’t magically erase the offensive nature of what follows. In fact, it can make the situation worse because it shows that the speaker is aware they’re about to say something offensive but chooses to say it anyway.

The result? An awkward situation where the other person feels insulted and disrespected.

6) Whatever…

This one’s a classic—and for good reason. 

Few phrases have the power to instantly shut down a conversation or make someone feel dismissed quite like a half-hearted “Whatever.” It’s the verbal equivalent of a shrug, signaling disinterest, apathy, or even contempt.

Those who lack social skills often fall back on this phrase when they’re unwilling—or unable—to engage in a meaningful way. While it might seem like a way to avoid conflict or end a discussion quickly, it often leaves the other person feeling unimportant and unheard.

For example, imagine someone sharing their perspective during a disagreement, only to hear “Whatever” in response. Instead of fostering understanding, it conveys a lack of respect for their thoughts and emotions, cutting off any chance of resolution.

Try actively listening and finding a more thoughtful way to express yourself. Even a simple, “I see your point, but I’m not sure I agree” can keep the conversation respectful and constructive. It’s all about showing others that their words—and their presence—matter.

7) That’s just how I am…

Last but not least, this one is another phrase that people lacking basic social skills often use. It’s usually a response to criticism or feedback, used to brush off any responsibility for their actions or behavior.

While it’s true that everyone has their own personality and quirks, using this phrase can come across as stubborn and unyielding. It can make the other person feel like their concerns or feelings are being dismissed.

Rather than using “That’s just how I am…”, it’s more beneficial to take constructive criticism on board and make an effort to improve. After all, growth and change are essential parts of life.
