Bitcoin’s ten-minute block time works as an average rather than a countdown clock. The network keeps hitting it by adjusting difficulty every 2,016 blocks, roughly every fortnight, so real gaps between blocks swing anywhere from about two minutes to thirty. Study those intervals as a statistical process and the true average comes out at 9 minutes and 38 seconds, according to an analysis of block intervals published in September 2025.
That gap between the number you expect and the number the network produces explains most of the confusion around crypto deposits.
Every figure here comes from published protocol documentation, exchange help pages and dated network fee data. Where sources disagree, we’ll say so rather than pick the tidiest figure. Your deposit passes through four separate stages, and only two of them can vary in any meaningful way.
The first is broadcast and propagation. Your wallet announces the transaction to the network and nodes pass it along. Seconds, and nothing you can influence.
The second is the mempool queue, where your transaction sits waiting for a miner or validator to pick it up. This one depends on the fee rate you attached and how busy things are. Conditions have been unusually clear lately; the Bitcoin mempool emptied completely twice in the first quarter of 2025, its first full clearances since April 2023, according to a fee-dynamics analysis from Digital Mining Solutions.
The third is block inclusion and confirmations, which belongs entirely to the chain you chose.
The fourth is the crediting threshold set by whoever receives the funds. Here’s the part most people never check: those thresholds are published, and they’re a policy choice rather than a protocol rule, as this breakdown of blockchain finality explains. Coinbase lists its requirements openly, needing 2 confirmations for Bitcoin and 14 for Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens. Binance has historically credited Bitcoin deposits at 1 to 2 confirmations.
Here’s how those four stages break down when you’re staring at a pending screen:
Broadcast: seconds, always. If your wallet says sent, this stage is done.
Mempool queue: the only stage your fee choice touches, and currently a short wait on most networks.
Confirmations: fixed by the chain’s block cadence, not by anyone’s server.
Crediting: a published number of confirmations, the same on a Sunday as a Wednesday.
Notice what that means for you. The stage people tend to blame is the one with a fixed, checkable number attached to it. Everything with real variability in it happens before your money reaches the site.
Which raises the obvious question of why does the same amount of money move at such different speeds depending on what carries it?

Look past the raw numbers and there’s a design difference worth understanding. Ethereum runs on a fixed clock. Time is carved into 12-second slots with 32 slots to an epoch, as documented on ethereum.org, and checkpoint finality usually arrives two epochs after your transaction lands, around 12.8 minutes.
Bitcoin runs on a lottery instead. Blocks arrive randomly around that ten-minute average, and because the process has no memory of how long it’s been, sending at a random moment means waiting about ten minutes for the next block rather than five.
Predictable and fast are two different qualities. Most explanations treat them as one.
That table has everyday use for you because a single cashier can offer several of these networks side by side. New Zealand’s bank rails got a proper upgrade on 26 May 2023, when Payments NZ led the move to 365-day payment processing across ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB, Westpac and others, so electronic payments made on weekends and public holidays can clear the same day.
Same day, though, is not the same as instant. Timing still varies between banks, and First Credit Union notes that payments made after 11:00pm are processed the following day. So the fair comparison is same-day settlement against per-block settlement, not open against closed.
BTCBench’s dated daily fee reports found that on both 26 January 2026 and 2 June 2026, Bitcoin’s cheapest hour was the 01:00 UTC hour, at 1 sat/vB, working out around US$0.16 for a standard transaction. With New Zealand sitting at UTC+12 in winter and UTC+13 on daylight time, that quiet stretch falls in your early afternoon. Not the small hours. Early afternoon, with a coffee.

Lightning moved US$1.17 billion across 5.22 million payments in November 2025, around 266% year-on-year growth, with the average payment size climbing from US$118 to US$223 over the course of the year, per Spark’s research on Lightning growth metrics. Kraken, Coinbase, Binance and OKX all support it now, and Lightning withdrawals make up more than 15% of Coinbase’s total Bitcoin withdrawals.
The other common hold-up is a form field. Since 29 May 2025, Binance has required New Zealand users to supply beneficiary details on crypto withdrawals under the AML/CFT Act 2009, and incomplete details can delay or return a transfer. Get that field right first time and you remove the single most avoidable wait in the whole journey.
There’s also an increasingly tidy option if you’d rather skip the exchange-rate question entirely. NZDD is backed one-to-one by New Zealand dollars held in a bare trust at a registered New Zealand bank with monthly reporting, and in March 2026 it received a first-of-its-kind designation confirming it isn’t a financial product under the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013, as summarised by law firm MinterEllison. It’s available on Ethereum and Base.
Janine Grainger, co-founder and chief executive of Easy Crypto, put the appeal of moving between stable and volatile assets to RNZ in November 2023: ‘If you’re already in crypto assets it’s a really easy way to move in and out of the stable-store-a-value into the more volatile currencies, and you can do that near-instantly 24/7 with very low fees.’ She added in the same interview that businesses trading internationally were ‘taking advantage of the lower fees for cross-border payments’.
Worth remembering that your fastest deposit is usually the one where nothing needed fixing.
Four clocks, and you set two of them before the cashier screen ever loaded. The network you chose decides the cadence; the details you entered decide whether anything stalls. The crediting threshold at the other end was published all along.
This kind of knowledge is becoming standard equipment across our region. Chainalysis reported a 69% year-on-year increase in on-chain value received across Asia-Pacific in its 2025 Global Adoption Index, released 2 September 2025, with Bitcoin still serving as the main fiat on-ramp and stablecoin use expanding quickly. Closer to home the numbers are more modest: roughly 227,000 active crypto users among about 5.3 million New Zealanders, with ownership estimates landing anywhere between 8% and 14% depending on how you count.
Both directions point the same way. Instant settlement is becoming unremarkable, and NZD-denominated balances on-chain will make the conversion question fade out altogether.
