There comes a point in life where everything starts to feel a little too routine, and the spark that once made each day feel exciting seems to fade.

If you can’t remember the last time life felt truly meaningful, it might not just be about your circumstances—it could be the result of certain habits or behaviors that are weighing you down.

Without even realizing it, these patterns can quietly take the joy and purpose out of life.

In this article, we’re going to explore seven behaviors that could be standing in the way of a more fulfilling life.

1) Living on autopilot

One of the most common culprits of a life that feels less meaningful is living on autopilot.

This is when we go through life doing things mechanically, without really thinking about why we’re doing them.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of routines and habits. We wake up, go to work, come home, watch TV, and repeat. It’s comfortable and safe. But it also lacks depth and purpose.

Living on autopilot means we’re not truly engaged with our lives.

As author and speaker Gustavo Razzetti points out, “When we live on autopilot, it feels like someone else is driving, not us.”

No wonder it can leave us feeling unsatisfied and disconnected.

The first step towards a more meaningful life is to step off the autopilot mode. Start by becoming more aware of your actions, thoughts, and decisions.

Ask yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Is it aligned with your values? Is it contributing to your growth? Is it making you feel fulfilled?

Breaking away from autopilot doesn’t mean abandoning routines completely. Routines can provide structure and stability.

But it’s vital that these routines serve a purpose and align with our values.

So if you’ve been feeling like life is lacking meaning, it might be time to say goodbye to living on autopilot.

2) Neglecting self-care

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s easy to neglect the one person that matters most – ourselves.

We often put our needs last, prioritizing work, family, friends and even chores over our own well-being.

This was something I struggled with for a long time. I was so focused on my work and helping others that I forgot to take care of myself.

I felt drained, frustrated and lost touch with who I was.

Neglecting self-care is a surefire way to make your life feel less meaningful. It’s hard to find fulfillment when you’re constantly running on empty, physically, emotionally and mentally.

Make time for self-care. It could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, reading a book, meditating or even just taking a few deep breaths.

Embrace your needs. Acknowledge their importance.

And most importantly, take action to meet them. Because the journey to a meaningful life begins with caring for yourself.

3) Chasing happiness

Most of us believe that the key to a fulfilling life is the pursuit of happiness.

We work relentlessly, accumulate possessions, strive for success, all in the quest for this elusive state of bliss.

But what if I told you that this endless chase is actually making you miserable?

The truth is, happiness is not a destination, it’s a byproduct of living a life aligned with our values and purpose.

When we chase happiness, we set ourselves up for disappointment because we’re relying on external circumstances to bring us joy.

Instead of trying to capture happiness, we should focus on living authentically and purposefully.

Embrace life’s challenges, foster meaningful relationships, and stay true to yourself.

These are the things that bring deep fulfillment and contentment, not fleeting moments of happiness.

4) Ignoring your creative potential

Living a meaningful life is about tapping into your inherent creativity and using it to make a positive impact.

But too often, we suppress our creative potential. We fall into the trap of thinking that creativity is reserved for artists, musicians, or writers.

We convince ourselves that we are not ‘creative types’, and in doing so, we deny a fundamental part of our humanity.

This is one of the biggest mistakes we can make.

Creativity is not just about producing art or music. It’s about finding innovative solutions to problems, thinking outside the box, and expressing our unique perspectives.

It’s about making decisions that align with our deepest values and contribute to the greater good.

Suppressing your creative potential can lead to a life that feels mundane and unfulfilling. It’s like seeing the world in black and white when you could be experiencing it in vibrant color.

So, if you can’t remember the last time life felt truly meaningful, maybe it’s time to reconnect with your creativity.

Start small – write a poem, paint a picture, brainstorm ideas for a project. You might be surprised at what you’re capable of.

Remember, you are creative. It’s part of who you are as a human being. Embrace your creativity and let it guide you towards a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

5) Living for societal expectations

We all want to fit in, to be accepted, to be loved. As a result, we often find ourselves trying to live up to societal expectations.

We pursue careers that don’t fulfill us, just because they’re considered ‘successful’.

We stay in relationships that don’t serve us, just to avoid being alone.

We silence our authentic selves, just to fit into the mold society has created for us.

This is a dangerous path to tread.

Living for societal expectations is like wearing a mask – it might protect you from judgement and criticism, but it also prevents you from truly connecting with others and with yourself.

In the end, it leaves you feeling disconnected and unfulfilled.

It’s time to take off the mask. Start living for YOU. Pursue your passions, even if they don’t align with societal norms.

Choose relationships that genuinely enrich your life. Speak your truth, even if it’s different from what’s considered ‘normal’.

6) Avoiding discomfort

It’s human nature to seek comfort and avoid discomfort. We naturally gravitate towards ease and convenience.

We avoid taking risks or facing challenges because they make us uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, in doing so, we may be robbing ourselves of the opportunity to grow and find true fulfillment.

Truth is, discomfort is not something to be avoided. It’s actually a good thing!

It’s a sign that we’re pushing our boundaries, stepping out of our comfort zone, and challenging ourselves. It’s through this discomfort that we learn, grow, and evolve.

Next time you find yourself avoiding a difficult conversation, a challenging project, or a new experience simply because it feels uncomfortable, pause and reconsider.

Instead of running away from the discomfort, lean into it.

You might find that on the other side of discomfort lies a life that is more meaningful and fulfilling than you ever thought possible.

7) Neglecting your relationships

In palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware’s book “The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying”, some of the regrets mentioned were:

“I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.”

“I wish I’d stayed in touch with my friends.”

It’s so true, isn’t it? In our quest for personal success and achievement, we often neglect what truly matters — our relationships.

And that can lead to a life that feels shallow and unfulfilling.

You may achieve great things, sure, but without someone to share them with, they can seem hollow and meaningless.

So if you want to invite more meaning into your life, start by nourishing your relationships. Spend quality time with your loved ones.

Be present in your interactions. Show empathy and understanding.

We are social creatures at our core, and if we don’t address that part of us, we might end up with a lot of regrets ourselves.

Final thoughts

Life can be deeply rewarding when we let go of what no longer serves us and focus on what truly matters.

By shifting our energy toward the things that bring us joy, fulfillment, and connection, we open ourselves to a more meaningful and satisfying existence.

It’s about creating space for growth, embracing what truly enriches our lives, and letting go of anything that holds us back.

At the end of the day, living with purpose is about prioritizing what’s most important and allowing yourself to fully experience the beauty of life.
